# Best hikes in Cappadocia to get away from the crowd in Göreme

When you think of a [backpacking trip to Turkey](https://www.novo-monde.com/en/backpacking-turkey/), the first two places that clearly come to mind are Istanbul and **Cappadocia**. The landscapes of Cappadocia are known worldwide for their incredible geological formations (fairy chimneys), their colors, and their cave villages (or, more recently, the hundreds of hot air balloons at sunrise). So we had, of course, planned to spend a few days there to discover all the wonders we had heard so much about.

![hiking in Cappadocia](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/love-valley-3.jpg)To get away from the crowd in Cappadocia, you need to hike!

But a world-famous region also means huge crowds. Nearly 3 million tourists visited Cappadocia in 2018! Villages like Göreme and Uçhisar are packed with visitors, and the spots accessible by car are literally swarming with people. So we asked ourselves one simple question:

> How can we enjoy Cappadocia away from the crowd?

And as you'll see in this article, the answer is very simple: you have to hike a little! As is often the case, all it takes is moving a short distance away from the roads or parking lots to find yourself completely alone. That's exactly [what happened to us at Hierapolis and Pamukkale](https://www.novo-monde.com/en/turkey-pamukkale-hierapolis/). Also, it's by hiking through the heart of the Cappadocia valleys that you'll discover the most beautiful landscapes and cave churches, especially since there are so many marked trails just waiting to be explored.

So, are you ready? Let's take you along to discover **Cappadocia on foot**!

## Map of Cappadocia's valleys

The first thing to know is that many of the points of interest to visit (aside from the Ihlara Valley and certain underground cities) are concentrated in the same area, within a radius of a few dozen kilometers around the village of Göreme. As you can see on the map of Cappadocia's valleys below, Göreme sits at something of a crossroads among most of the valleys.

## Where to stay to hike in Cappadocia

Even though it's the most touristy village in Cappadocia, and we'd been advised to stay in Avanos or Çavuşin instead, we'd still recommend settling in the village of Göreme, for several reasons:

- As you can see on the map above, Göreme sits right at the heart of Cappadocia's various points of interest, and you can do absolutely everything on foot from the village. It's the ideal base for hikes that radiate outward. Plus, since many dolmuş (minibuses) pass through Göreme, you can explore the more distant spots by public transport (the underground cities, Ihlara, etc.).
- Even though Göreme has a bit of a Disneyland feel with all its restaurants and shops, the village is quite pretty. It's also nice to have small supermarkets (for picnic supplies) and plenty of options for eating and having a drink in the evening after a good hike. That said, restaurant prices here are clearly higher than elsewhere in Turkey. Check out our tips and favorite spots for eating in Göreme.
- Since it's such a touristy village, the range of accommodation is huge. Even though there are some fantastic 5-star cave hotels that cost a fortune, you'll also find quite a few cheap hostels that let you visit Cappadocia on a small budget. We first stayed 4 nights at [Ali's Pension](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/stay22/alis-guesthouse/), which offers cheap rooms and dorms with a good breakfast. Then we finished our stay with 2 nights at [Kose Pension](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/hostelworld/kose-pension/), which is in the same price range but also has a great pool. You're bound to find something that suits you by comparing options [on Booking](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/booking/hotel-goreme-2/ "hotel goreme").

Here's a map where you can see the different hotels and apartments in Cappadocia at a glance. Feel free to adjust the filters to refine your search:

## 2 useful apps for hiking in Cappadocia

As with hiking the [Lycian Way](https://www.novo-monde.com/en/lycian-way-fethiye-xanthos/), I'd once again recommend [Maps.me](http://maps.me) or [Organic Maps](https://organicmaps.app/). These two apps are simply essential for finding all the trails and points of interest offline. Otherwise, the app we use daily is [Alltrails](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-home-en/ "alltrails home EN"). You'll actually find the hiking maps from this article there. For each map, we've added a button so you can download the track in the format of your choice: GPX, KML, Garmin, etc. If you don't have an account yet, just create one (it's free) to enable downloads of our tracks. Happy hiking!

You can find all our Alltrails tracks in one single place by [clicking here](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-capadocia-en/ "alltrails capadocia en").

## How were the valleys of Cappadocia formed?

A very long time ago (10 million years ago to be exact ;)), several volcanoes erupted in the region. They covered what is now Cappadocia with lava, forming a layer of volcanic tuff, a particularly crumbly rock,100 to 150 meters thick. With the cold, this layer cracked, and then rain and wind spent years sculpting the famous "fairy chimneys" we know today.

![Kapadokya](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-4.jpg)Cappadocia looks like this!

These chimneys were later carved out by humans and used as dwellings, churches, or pantries. The chimneys actually worked as a kind of natural air conditioning: warmer inside in winter, and always cool in summer. Today, the entire area containing these cave villages and underground cities is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In our opinion, the best way to discover Cappadocia's hidden treasures is to go hiking. The hiking trails are very well marked, and it's also the only way to reach certain churches, valleys or castles that aren't accessible otherwise. And of course, it's also the best way to get away from the crowds and enjoy these magical landscapes in peace.

In the section that follows, I'll walk through 4 loops starting from Göreme that cover most of Cappadocia's points of interest. These routes are all a bit long, but some can easily be shortened by taking a bus to or from a village, or by cutting across at certain points.

## Loop Göreme - Love Valley - White Valley - Uçhisar - Pigeon Valley - Göreme

![the love valley](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/love-valley.jpg)

### At a glance

- Distance: 11.8 km
- Elevation gain: +- 370 m
- Duration: 4 h
- Difficulty: moderate
- Recommended start time: Head to [Love Valley](https://www.novo-monde.com/en/things-to-do-in-cappadocia/#valleys-cappadocia) for sunrise with the hot air balloons (see [our article on the best sunrise spots](https://www.novo-monde.com/en/cappadocia-hot-air-balloons/)) and continue the hike afterward.

[Download the GPS track](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-goreme-loop-en/)

### Love Valley

We start with a beautiful loop from Göreme that passes through the famous Love Valley. We'll let you guess why it's called that ;). Unfortunately, this was also the only hike Fabienne managed to do during our stay in Cappadocia, since she got sick shortly after. Catching a cold in 30 degree heat! Such bad luck, and of all places, in Cappadocia :(.

We leave Göreme along the road that climbs toward Uçhisar, then take a track off to the right through the vineyards. Yes indeed, Cappadocia is Turkey's most renowned wine region! We continue like this for about 2 km, with a magnificent view of the Rose and Red Valleys on our right, and Love Valley unfolding on our left.

![forme des rochers en Cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/cappadoce-roche-1024x908.jpg)![vignes de cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/vignes-cappadoce-1024x736.jpg)

Then, we take a small path that goes down into Love Valley on the left, down to a track. We head up the valley following the track, before taking a trail on the right that leads us through these rock formations that look like asparagus (or something else; we'll let you be the judge ;)). There's also a kind of small café (Love Garden) with a particularly nice view.

### White Valley and Uçhisar

We continue up Love Valley, then White Valley, for about 3 km. The fairy chimneys are gradually disappearing to give way to other geological formations that are no less beautiful.

We arrive at the foot of the village of Uçhisar and its imposing castle. We really recommend climbing to the top, since the view from up there is simply breathtaking (Price: 400 TL per person as of September 2026 to enter the castle). Judge for yourself ;).

![chateau d'Uchisar](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-1024x713.jpg)![vue derrière Uchisar](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-1-976x1024.jpg)![panorama Uchisar](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-3-1024x641.jpg)![vue sur Goreme depuis Uchisar](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-4-684x1024.jpg)

### Pigeon Valley

We then go down from the village into Pigeon Valley, named after the hundreds of pigeon houses you'll see carved into the walls along the trail. Back in the day, people used pigeons as messengers, and their droppings as fertilizer. Be careful not to go all the way down to the bottom of the valley, as it's a dead end! Stay on the left side to pass in front of a small tea garden. The trail then continues gently downhill through the valley, bringing you back to the village of Göreme after 2 km.

## Loop Göreme - Pigeon - Zemi - Görkündere - Göreme

### At a glance

- Distance: 13 km
- Elevation gain: +- 360 m
- Duration: 4 h 30
- Difficulty: moderate
- Recommended start time: We recommend either starting the hike through Pigeon Valley around 3 to 4 pm and finishing at sunset above Göreme, or starting at the viewpoint above Görkündere for sunrise and then doing the hike in the other direction.

[Download the track](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-zemi-en/)

![Uchisar and the pigeon valley](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/uchisar-viewpoint.jpg)

We set off again from Göreme, this time going up Pigeon Valley in the other direction. Rather than heading up toward the village of Uçhisar, we stay in the valley all the way to the end. I take a bit more time to admire all these dovecotes, some of which are richly decorated.

![pigeonnier cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/pigeon-valley-2-839x1024.jpg)![2 pigeonniers cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/pigeon-valley-3-1024x750.jpg)

At the end of the valley, there's a fantastic view over the whole valley and the village of Uçhisar. However, I'd recommend enjoying this view before continuing up to the road. The route then passes by Güvercinlik Vadisi, THE viewpoint over Pigeon Valley where every bus and car stops. Let's just say it's shoulder to shoulder with people here ;).

![pigeon valley viewpoint](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/pigeon-valley-viewpoint.jpg)

### Zemi Valley

We quickly leave the crowds behind by turning left onto a track that leads to Zemi Valley. The trail crosses more vineyards, with a nice view of the Rose and Red Valleys in the distance. After maybe 1 km, we reach a spot above the valley that will lead us back toward Göreme.

![vignes de Cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/vigne-cappadoce-1024x761.jpg)![panneau zemi](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zemi-valley-1024x713.jpg)

Zemi Valley is very green, and we walk in the shade of trees most of the way. After 1 km in the valley, we reach a junction, and I'd recommend heading up for a short round trip to 2 small cave churches that are well worth a look.

![fleurs de Cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zemi-valley-4-835x1024.jpg)![vallée de Zemi](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zemi-valley-1-747x1024.jpg)![eglise troglodyte zemi cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zemi-valley-2-764x1024.jpg)![la vallée de Zemi](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zemi-valley-3-1024x642.jpg)

We return to the junction to continue on the trail, which turns into a track as we get closer to Göreme. After maybe 2 km, there's a beautiful cave church built into a rock wall, accessible if you're brave enough to climb the ladder. In my opinion, it's worth it, as the interior is quite impressive! A little further on the right, you can take a short detour to see the El Nazar Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unfortunately, it was closed when I visited. The entrance fee is 3 euros if you don't have the Museum Pass.

![eglise zemi cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/eglise-zemi-1024x714.jpg)![eglise el nazar](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/el-nazar-church-1024x677.jpg)

### Görkündere

To finish the hike, follow the signs for "Görkündere" on the left to cross a mini valley with beautiful fairy chimneys. The trail then climbs to a stunning viewpoint over these formations, slightly set back from the spot where everyone gathers for sunset. It's also a lovely spot near Göreme for sunrise, and it's entirely possible to do the hike in the opposite direction after watching the sunrise.

## Loop Göreme - Red and Rose Valleys - Swords Valley - Göreme

### At a glance

- Distance: 13.8 km
- Elevation gain: +- 450 m
- Duration: 4 to 5 h
- Difficulty: moderate
- Recommended start time: We'd suggest starting this hike in the late afternoon to enjoy the beautiful light in the Red and Rose Valleys.

[Download the track](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-red-rose-swords/)

![the rose valley](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/rose-valley.jpg)

### Meskendir Valley

Honestly, the first part of the hike, which follows the road up to Kaya Camping (for 2.5 km), isn't hugely interesting. So if you manage to catch a dolmuş or get dropped off by car at the start, that's not a bad idea! I didn't really find any other interesting ways to get there ;). We turn left after the campsite to follow a track that quickly turns into a trail through Meskendir Valley. The landscapes you see here are just a taste of what awaits for the rest of the hike.

![Meskendir valley Cappadocia](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/meskendir-valley.jpg)

### Rose and Red Valleys

After about 2 km, we turn right onto the trail that goes up Red Valley. Along the way, I stopped to drink squeezed orange juice at the home of a man who apparently lives right there. It felt so good in that heat! He also gave me a little booklet about Islam in French, which I accepted mostly out of politeness ;). The path then climbs toward the viewpoint (accessible by car) over the Rose and Red Valleys. Along the way, we pass by Grape Church (or St. Niketas Church), a pretty church set among the vineyards, before reaching the viewpoint's parking area.

No need to stop at the parking area; it's better to keep going on the trail that goes up towards the Rose Valley to enjoy the view in peace. The landscapes are truly magnificent, especially with the beautiful lights at the end of the day.

![vallée rose panorama](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/rose-valley-1-1024x631.jpg)![couleur vallée rose cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/rose-valley-2-752x1024.jpg)

After a long stretch, the path descends quite steeply to the bottom of Rose Valley, then climbs back up the other side toward the Church of the Crosses (or Cross Church, Haçlı Kilise), which is well worth stepping inside! There's also a small café here (Emin'in Yeri) if you fancy a juice. Honestly, there's not much to say except that your eyes are treated the whole way along this trail. The path then descends the entire upper part of Rose Valley down to the track leading to the village of Çavuşin.

### Swords Valley

On the other side of the track, we go up toward Swords Valley, the last one before heading back to Göreme. The rocks here look a bit like morels, at least I think so ;). Next, we pass by another church carved into a huge rock. In fact, the church must have 3 or 4 levels inside; it's very impressive!

We continue along Swords Valley without heading straight back toward Göreme. The trail enters a fairly narrow canyon that's well worth the detour. After climbing one or two small ladders, you come out of the canyon near the road, just above Göreme's open air museum. From there, it's simply a matter of following the road back to the starting point, with the option of climbing to Göreme's sunset point to finish the hike, if you haven't already done so.

![sword valley canson](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/sword-valley-canyon-1-666x1024.jpg)![canyon vallée des épées](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/sowrd-valley-canyon-707x1024.jpg)

## Loop Göreme - Red - Akdag - Zelve - Cavusin - Göreme

### At a glance

- Distance: 18.5 km
- Elevation gain: +- 530 m
- Duration: 6 to 7 h
- Difficulty: fairly difficult
- Recommended start time: For this hike, it's best to leave before sunrise to watch the sunrise from Swords Valley, then continue the loop while it's still not too hot.

[Download the track](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-zvelve-en/)

![zelve cappadocia](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zvelve.jpg)

As this loop explores the area behind Mount Akdağ (actually Mount Aktepe), it's longer and more difficult than the other three. But to shorten it a bit, you can also take a bus or taxi back from Çavuşin. So we'd recommend leaving Göreme at night to reach the church in Swords Valley, taking the most direct route this time (unlike the previous hike, where we finished via the canyon). The idea is to reach the viewpoint marked on the map in time to watch the sunrise (and the hot air balloons), then continue the hike. (Note: The viewpoint is actually right next to the trail shown on the map ;).)

![sunrise cappadocia](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/lever-de-soleil-cappadoce.jpg)The only pic of hot air balloons you'll see in this article ;)

### Rose Valley

After enjoying the show, we head back down to climb through the lower part of Rose Valley (which we hadn't covered in the previous hike). As we go up, we pass a cave church (Direkli Kilise) that doesn't look like much from the outside but impressed me the most, thanks to its tall columns inside.

![l'intérieur de l'église](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/eglise-vallee-rose-1024x783.jpg)![église extérieur](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/eglise-vallee-rose-1-1024x740.jpg)

The path then joins the trail we took on hike number 3, climbing back up toward the viewpoint over the Rose and Red Valleys. But this time, we take the path that goes up to the right, up Mount Aktepe, whose summit isn't far. If you're looking for a scenic camping spot for sunrise and sunset, the summit of Aktepe is definitely a great choice. It's like a grassy plateau with a 360-degree panorama.

![cappadoce rochers](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-1024x669.jpg)![montagne akdag](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-1-684x1024.jpg)![fleurs cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-2-1024x686.jpg)![fleur cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-3-1024x653.jpg)

### Zelve Open Air Museum

The path then continues on the other side of the Aktepe before descending to the Zelve open air museum. On the right, there's also a beautiful view over Imagination Valley. We won't cross through it, as it would make too big a detour for this already long route. Do be careful though, as the last stretch of the descent to Zelve is quite steep, so trekking poles could come in handy here.

![la vallée de l'imaginaire](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-4-1024x800.jpg)![zvelve](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/akdag-5-1024x711.jpg)

At the end of the descent, we reach the Zelve open air museum, which I'd strongly recommend visiting! Admission costs 12 euros per person (September 2026 price). Personally, it was my favorite cave village in Cappadocia, and if you arrive early in the morning as I did, you might have the whole site to yourself. Plus, the village is well maintained (and protected). You'll find plenty of very well-done information panels, which is fairly rare in Turkey!

![eglise zelve cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zelve-1024x684.jpg)![village zelve](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zelve-1-1024x838.jpg)![village zelve cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zelve-2-1024x773.jpg)![maison zelve](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/zelve-3-1024x706.jpg)

After the visit, we follow the road for maybe 1.5 km to the Valley of the Monks (Pasabag Valley), where you'll also find some very beautiful fairy chimneys. However, don't expect to escape the crowds, as there are huge concrete parking lots right in front of the site where lots of tour buses stop. In short, I didn't stay long in the area and immediately headed up the path behind the Valley of the Monks toward Çavuşin.

![vallée des moines](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/monk-valley-1024x691.jpg)![fleurs de cappadoce](https://www.novo-monde.com/app/uploads/2019/06/fleurs-cappadoce-1024x725.jpg)

### Çavuşin

The path then goes down to the village of Çavuşin, known for its ruins, including the church of St. John the Baptist (or Çavuşin Kilisesi). If you still have some energy left, it's worth exploring this fortress-like cave rock that overlooks the village. Access used to be free. Today, it seems the interior is closed, but you can still get up close.

To finish the hike, all that's left is to head back to Göreme. Dolmuş minibuses leave from Çavuşin every hour. Otherwise, you can also take a taxi. If you haven't seen Swords Valley yet and still have some energy left, you can follow the route marked on the map, which will take you right through it ;).

## Other hikes we could have done

As I told you, the 4 hikes above will let you discover Cappadocia's most beautiful spots, far from the crowds and on foot from Göreme. But there are still a couple of hikes that are a bit further out, for which it's better to have a car. And there are surely others too! Feel free to share your suggestions in the comments:

- **Ihlara Valley**: Located about 80 km from Göreme, with a hiking trail running through it from one end to the other. There are many day tours that leave from Göreme to Ihlara, but I'd recommend spending a night there instead, to do the hike in peace. If you're interested, you can find this hike's route on the [AllTrails app here](https://www.novo-monde.com/go/alltrails/alltrails-ihlara/ "alltrails ihlara").
- **Imagination Valley (Devrent Valley)**: You get a great view of it from the summit of Aktepe, but the easiest way to get there is still by car. On foot, it would mean a big extra detour on top of the 4th hike. Also, looking at the map, the trail there is quite small. There are no cave churches here, but rock formations that will spark your imagination to picture all sorts of animals or objects ;).

We hope you'll enjoy these hiking routes, which will take you through the incredible landscapes of Cappadocia, in complete peace and quiet. Today, this region is almost more famous for its hot air balloons than for its history and extraordinary valleys. With this article, we wanted to set the record straight, in a way, by first showing you its secrets: fairy chimneys, cave villages and cave churches, etc., before the balloons at sunrise ;).
