San Pedro is the hub for all tours and activities in the Atacama Desert. We stayed within walking distance of the downtown area. The town is very busy at night and weekends. Many excellent restaurants. Tour companies are all along the main street.
I would recommend renting a car and visiting most sites on your own. All main highways are paved and most sites are easy to locate but have dirt/gravel connecting roads from the main highway. Just slow down and take it easy and a sedan will be all you need. A 4X4 is only needed for really difficult off-road travel.
I would recommend staying for at least 4 days to have time to see the sites without being rushed.

San Pedro de Atacama is one of the best destinations in Chile. There are many may things to see and do, from geisers to salt flats. There is an activity for everyone. Weather also helps in keeping you wanting to do some outdoor activities. I love it!

An incredibly vibrant small town in the desert.
An incredibly vibrant small town in the desert. The tours available to surrounding areas make it a first choice destination. The diversity in the landscape from the salt lakes to the high mountain geysers is just amazing. The availability of different food choices is really good. Pizza, pasta, empanadas, stews etc. There is a fabulous bakery ,La Franchicheria, on Licanbur street that every minibus stops at to pick up the bread for the tours(breakfasts luncheons snacks included in the tour). Their white chocolate and raspberry croissant is just the best ever.
Unfortunately as it was a full moon and cloudy we didn't get to do any stargazing. For our tours we used Mitampi on Caracoles Street. Ask for Julian.

A small and beautiful city, in the middle of the desert, focused on turism. The places to visit are extremely beautiful and unique. Good restaurants and easy to get around. I've been there in December, dont know if it is the best time of the year because it is very hot. Maybe october or april would be better.

This was the second time for us at San Pedro, and the first time with our 8 years old kid. We loved how the town has changed from the first time we visited, while maintaining traditions that make it so unique. The landscape is so overwhelming that you can't help feeling touched by nature. For chileans it's the perfect way to connect to our past, while for the foreigners is a beautiful way to discover the richness of our cultural past.
There are good restaurants that will totally satisfy sophisticated palates and street food that will make you feel like a chilean citizen.
One important issue is that national parks allow general public during mornings while they reserve afternoons for tour agencies. If you want to use agencies, the best is to use the mornings to visit the town, museums, buy souvenirs and the likes. If you rent a car and want to drive to the natural attractions, you have to do it in the morning. So, depending on your preferences, you should plan in advance.

The location is a little out of the main part of town but walkable. Although we generally do not eat breakfast, we did because it was plentiful and delicious. The charm of the hotel is the beauty of the common areas, the comfort of the rooms, and the lovely people running he hotel. They were super helpful and attentive to our needs and very helpful with tours and helping us know what activities could be done on our own. I would definitely recommend renting a car in Calama to use in Atacama, it gives you a ton more options.
Great location less than 10 mins walk from central San Pedro de Atacama
Peaceful surroundings on an evening so there is no disturbance if you have an early morning tour
Warm and friendly staff who cannot do enough for you
Large, well equipped kitchen
Good breakfast included and a takeaway breakfast is even given on mornings with an early start (as a lot of tours here are)
Spotlessly clean
Individual reading light at each bed
Hot water showers
Pool is big enough for a cooling dip in the heat of the day
The design of the hotel and rooms was very in keeping with the location and an ideal 2min walk from the main street. We did the hotel transfer from Calama airport which was pretty expensive but bus options appeared limited. Welcome drink on arrival. Pretty good breakfast selection. Pool was ridiculously cold though, more for show, and had to pay for jacuzzi so didn't try it. The massages across the road which are part of the hotel were really good and the pool area there was better to relax in afterwards.
The room was very spacious, super clean and in very good condition. We felt super comfortable. It was also nice to not to be surrounded by other apartments and hotels but still being close enough to the city centre (though having car I would recommend). We had wonderful views on a beautiful sky at night. The breakfast was always very fresh and delicious - we loved it. On top the owners are incredibly nice and always eager to help you.
Our whole experience at Hostal Montepardo and San Pedro de Atacama was fantastic. Robert and Alicia at Hostal Montepardo were always extremely friendly and helpful. Robert organised all our tours and our transfer to/from Calama and everything went really smoothly. The tours were amazing!
We loved the friendly, casual and attractive ambience of Hostal Montepardo and highly recommend it.
We loved everything. The room, the breakfast, the yard area, kids enjoyed the pool, the location.
We were able to park in the premises which in San Pedro de Atacama centre is quite privilege. The hotel was so nice and allowed us to use their common areas including pool and parking lot after we had already checked out and were just making the use of time til our evening flight.
We were group of four and we enjoyed our stay in Hostel Mal de Puna very much. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Cecilia helped us to book a safe taxi from San Pedro de Atacama to Antofagasta. The hostel was very clean and the four bed room really nice and cozy. Our stay also included breakfast which was really nice. We also liked the ping pong table!
very good stay in san pedro de atacama with friendly staff. nice rooftop to see stars at night. room was comfortable and kitchend has everything we needed. we could park our car in the private area. nearby is resturant, a minimarket and across the street is the gas station with a 24/7 shop. center of the town is reachable by foot in 10minutes.
Staff were good and quick to respond
They packed breakfast for us even, when we had to go very early morning excursions
There is a small jacuzzi
Ambiance is great!
Location is very good
Probably one of the nicer hotels in the town center
Very intimate hotel with only 10 or so rooms
Bathroom was large and comfortable
Room was clean
We had a wonderful time staying at Hotel Tulor! Great location, 2 minute walk from the Main Street with tons of restaurants and shops. The hotel has many nice lounging areas, and all of the staff were incredibly friendly and always happy to help us. Would stay here again!
The whole staff were unbelievably kind and very knowledgeable about San Pedro. The room was clean and beautiful, with tons of space and a lovely patio; the hotel meals were sublime each day. It's the perfect place to rest and relax in Atacama.
the property is really nice and not really a hostel. it is so much better than casa algarabdo right next to it but I feel just because that property calls itself a hotel and this a hostel it suffers. it is much better than the hotel next door!
Perfect location at the end of the main ‘street’…loved the feel of the property and set up. Sort of bungalo’s within a hotel. Bfst amazing and so nice of them to set out a bag bfst for the Geiser or Rocks tour you came for and depart 6am
I had an excellent stay. The hostel is clean, well managed and perfect for a trip to San Pedro de Atacama. The breakfast is excellent, and they even made me a to-go bag on the morning I was unable to make breakfast because of a tour.
Great experience at this hotel. Tastefully designed and very comfortable. Above and beyond team. I enjoyed massage and skincare at the wellness center. Delicious breakfast and dinner. I couldn’t ask for more really.
Perfect place to stay when you visit San Pedro de Atacama. Facilities are really good; swimming pool and jacuzzi are great. The offer a shuttle to the city center of the town and the breakfast is amazing!
Yakana Hotel was clean and comfortable. We loved our stay here, the staff was very friendly and free breakfast was offered every morning! We will definitely be staying here again.
