Our Heymondo review: the best travel insurance for non EU residents?

Last Update: 12/03/2024 0 COMMENT

Heymondo is a Spanish-based insurance broker (better known as Mondo in Spain) which has recently expanded into the USA, Italy and, more recently, France. They offer a full range of travel insurance cover for short- and long-term trips…

If you read these lines, it’s probably because you want to know more about Heymondo and whether their insurance coverage is competitive with other travel insurance companies on the market, such as Chapka, AVA, ACS and Truetraveller. So, in the following lines, we’re going to give you our honest opinion about Heymondo and discuss with you whether and in what cases it might be worth getting an insurance policy from them.

Who is Heymondo?

As I just told you, Heymondo is a Spanish-based insurance company (under the sweet name of Smart Insurance Correduria de Seguros S.L.) that started offering travel insurance cover under the Mondo brand name back in 2017. In fact, they have grown rapidly in Spain, where they have acquired a solid reputation.

But unlike other insurance brokers, they didn’t stop there and decided to offer travel insurance cover in Italy, the US, France… What’s special about Heymondo is that for each country in which they are active, they work with a different insurance partner (IMA insurance in France, AXA for their English-speaking package), and so offer different products in France than in the United States.

Their english-speaking packages are quite good in our opinion so we will mainly talk about those below. But for example, for our french speaking readers, we recommend them to also check the english Heymondo packages as they offer a better quality / price ratio in our opinion.

Heymondo long stay travel insurance

Since on this blog we’re primarily focusing on longer trips and backpacking, let’s start by talking about Heymondo long stay coverage, which insures trips that are longer than 3 months.

Let’s start by saying that the Heymondo long stay is quite cheap compared to many other travel insurances (Worldnomads for example lol). Nevertheless, I think they provide a good level of coverage for the price.

Note: for a more detailed comparison, you can compare Heymondo long stays and other travel insurances like Truetraveller in our best backpacker insurance comparison. Also note that by using our links you’ll get a 5% discount on all Heymondo insurances.

A few other interesting points to note about the Heymondo long stay coverage:

  • Heymondo mobile app: Heymondo offers an app that makes it easy to manage your policy, report claims and call free of charge in case of emergency (whatsapp call).
  • Also covers non-EU residents: Unfortunately, some of the best backpacker travel insurance providers, such as Truetraveller, don’t cover non-EU residents, which is fortunately not the case with Heymondo.
  • Civil liability a bit on the low side: In our opinion, the civil liability coverage limit is a bit weak. If you don’t know what civil liability actually is, we explain it in detail here.
Our Heymondo long stay review

If you’re a resident of the EU, we think that the travel insurance company Truetraveller offers Backpacker coverages with a better quality / price ratio than Heymondo. But if you’re not leaving within the EU, we think Heymondo long stay is the best option for long term trips and backpackers. If you’re not sure, you can compare the best backpacker insurance coverages here.

Other insurance coverages offered by Heymondo

Like all insurance brokers, Heymondo doesn’t just offer long-term travel insurance for backpackers. Of course, they also offer cover for short-term trips.

Heymondo single trip travel insurance (- 90 days)

If you’re going on a trip of less than 90 days, Heymondo offers an interesting single trip insurance that comes in 3 packages (top, premium, medical) with different coverage limits:

Heymondo single trip travel insurance

The big plus of Heymondo’s single trip cover is its flexibility, which is rather uncommon for this type of travel insurance. In addition to the three coverage levels, it is possible to increase the maximum limits for electronic items, add adventure sports insurance, etc…

In my opinion, the only downside is that, as with long-term travel insurance, the limit for personal liability of 60,000€ is quite far below anything offered by the competition.

Check on the Heymondo Website

Heymondo Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance

If you make several trips of less than 90 days a year, this insurance could be right for you. For €270/year, you’ll have roughly equivalent coverage to the “Top” travel insurance… which pays for itself in 2-3 trips (depending on their duration) for the equivalent single trip coverage.

A significant advantage is that cancellation insurance (up to €3,000) is directly included in this coverage, which represents a considerable saving if you had planned to take out cancellation insurance anyway.

Heymondo’s plus: its mobile application

An added bonus of Heymondo insurance is its mobile app, which allows you to call free of charge 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency (whatsapp call), manage claims and documents required for reimbursements, and access your active insurance policies.

Heymondo are obviously not the only ones to offer a mobile app, but apart from Chapka, I don’t think there are many other travel insurers on the market that allow you to manage claims directly in an app.

Heymondo: our honest review

Heymondo reviews

Finally, we’d also like to point out that Heymondo’s online reviews are pretty good, which is quite rare for travel insurance (people who leave reviews are usually people who’ve had a problem). So that’s a pretty good sign!

For our part, we find that Heymondo offers very comprehensive insurance coverage overall, even if we do find the upper limit for civil liability a bit low which is a pitty. For backpackers / travelers not based in the EU, their Heymondo long-stay offer is, in our opinion, the best on the market. But don’t take our word for it and compare the best long-term travel insurance here.

P.S. If you buy insurance through one of our links, you’ll pay the same price ( or even get a small discount ) but we’ll receive a small commission. This has in no way influenced what we’ve written above, but will help us continue to create free, independent content on this blog.
