The best travel insurance for digital nomads in 2026

Last Update: 22/01/2026 0 COMMENT

After traveling around the world, we decided to become digital nomads. Well, that’s the short version—you can read our full story here! Being a remote worker means saying goodbye to routine. This alternative way of living and working remotely is a beautiful blend of freedom, travel, discovery, connections, exchanges, experiences, and activities. However, a few issues can spoil the picture, including illness, hospitalization, accidents, theft, and so on. Unfortunately, just because you’re working on your laptop doesn’t mean you’re protected from life’s unexpected moments! We’ve already talked about insurance for long stays, but what about travel insurance specifically designed for digital nomads? A simple health or travel insurance policy just won’t cut it! We’ve compared the best companies to help you make the right choice.

The best insurance for your digital nomad profile

Before choosing the best travel insurance, you need to ask yourself: “What type of digital nomad am I?” You won’t choose the same policy if you travel twice a year for one month each time versus being a full-time nomadic worker. Here are the different digital nomad profiles with the best corresponding insurance options.

Occasional nomad

Do you have a permanent home and travel a few times a year to work elsewhere? Then you’re an occasional nomad, and most people in this category are freelancers, employees with flexible working conditions, or even entrepreneurs. We’re typically talking about a maximum of 3 months (consecutive or not) outside your home country.

Best insurance for occasional nomads

If you travel once a year at most, the best insurance is True Traveller, especially if you speak English well and are going for several months. The True Value and Traveller coverage options are solid: €10 million for medical expenses, €1 or €2 million for personal liability. For personalized protection, you can add coverage according to your needs: equipment, baggage loss, and extreme sports.

However, if you travel several times a year, we recommend Heymondo’s Annual Multi-Trip policy. The price is unbeatable and the coverage limits are good. In short, excellent value for money!

Your insurance needs for temporary stays

  • Coverage for short or medium-term stays (1 week to 3 months)
  • Ability to keep health coverage from your home country
  • Less interest in insurance covering electronic equipment, routine medical consultation costs, activities…

Part-time nomad

You’re a part-time nomad if you have a permanent home but love to move around! You spend most of the year outside your country of residence, exploring one or more countries at your own pace.

Best insurance for part-time nomads

If you travel several times a year, less than 3 months per trip, Heymondo offers the ideal formula with its Annual Multi-Trip policy. The price doesn’t increase with age, you’re covered worldwide; it’s one of the best value-for-money options in this selection! Do the math compared to other companies, but it could definitely be worth choosing this policy!

However, if you’re spending several consecutive months in the same country, opt for True Traveller or ACS.

Your insurance needs for long stays

  • Worldwide flexibility
  • Emergency dental and vision care
Fabienne and Ben working on computers in a tent

Expat nomad

You’re more of an expat nomad if you want to test out expatriation for a short period. You’ve decided to live abroad for at least one year, whether or not you keep your home. The idea is to live in one place while exploring neighboring countries.

Best insurance for expats

In our opinion, you’ll get the best value for money with Chapka’s CAP Tempo Expat policy. The coverage limits are higher than competitors and you have access to more benefits than a simple travel insurance policy.

Your insurance needs for expatriation

  • Continuous coverage, flexible worldwide
  • High rental liability and personal liability limits

Full-time nomad

The full-time digital nomad simply doesn’t have a permanent home. They’re highly mobile and move around whenever they want, often for several years. Their life is 100% nomadic! In this scenario, your coverage needs will be quite different.

Best insurance for full-time nomads

For digital nomads, the number one insurance is Safety Wing, but is there anything better? Their Essential plan base rate is very attractive: €48 for 4 weeks. However, the coverage limits aren’t very high: €215,000 per contract for medical expenses and €21,500 for personal liability. That said, it’s ultra-flexible and could work perfectly if your needs are basic. The Complete contract is very solid for medical expenses, but doesn’t include personal liability. Even though it includes routine medical expenses (general practitioner, specialists…), even for serious or chronic illnesses, its pricing doesn’t justify the benefits in our opinion.

Your insurance needs for full-time nomads

  • Flexible worldwide coverage
  • Electronic equipment coverage
  • Long-term contract (> 24 months) or renewal option
  • Trip delay, cancellation, or interruption coverage
  • Equipment and baggage coverage

We haven’t included WorldTrips’ Atlas Multi Trip or Yupwego’s Ready to Go Adventure contracts or Genki’s. Their limits are too low or their coverage isn’t sufficient in our opinion for such stays. Other contracts like ACS Expat offer good coverage, but the price depends on your expatriation country, age, and the coverage limit you want.

Digital nomad-specific insurance vs. regular travel insurance

You might think that subscribing to regular travel insurance is enough to cover your needs when working remotely abroad. Short-term insurance would be perfect for your 2 months in Spain or long-term insurance would be ideal for your 6 months in Bali, right? Actually, it all depends on your coverage needs for your equipment and leisure activities on-site. Some companies offer options to increase the limit for electronic devices or add plenty of activities to the coverage.

However, keep in mind that these insurance policies are insufficient for expatriation or full-time nomadism. The limits for medical care and liability aren’t high enough. Additionally, this contract must be flexible depending on where you go and renewable at your convenience: monthly, quarterly, or annually.

Note: If you subscribe to regular travel insurance (not specific to remote workers) to work remotely abroad and an incident occurs related to your professional activity, there’s no need theoretically to mention that this stay isn’t entirely tourist-related. If you mention it, you won’t be compensated because this incident occurred at “your workplace” and that’s not covered. Also, companies won’t bother digging too much to find out whether or not you were working at that moment.

Coverage benefits: what does digital nomad insurance actually cover?

Fundamentally, what is travel insurance for? What coverage is included? In this section, we’ll explain what digital nomad insurance actually covers.

Mandatory insurance

Around 40 countries have introduced specific visas for digital nomads. Almost all of them require proof of insurance in order to obtain this precious ticket ;).

Health insurance: emergency care and hospitalization abroad

A medical emergency can happen anywhere. Imagine: a nasty virus going around a coliving space, a torn ACL while skiing, a sprain or fracture while hiking, a dental abscess, and so on. A doctor‘s visit, X-rays, medication, surgery, or even hospitalization… The bill can be seriously steep depending on the situation and where you are! Healthcare in Thailand will clearly cost less than healthcare in New Zealand, for example.

To be worry-free on this front, prioritize companies that offer healthcare reimbursement with the highest limit. Also, note whether you’re covered during temporary stays in your home or residence country.

In case of hospitalization, these contracts cover accommodation and transportation so a loved one can be at your bedside. If you’re traveling with your pet, some companies even cover the repatriation and care of your faithful companion.

Repatriation and assistance

In case of a serious accident or illness requiring care that can’t be provided on-site, you’ll need to be evacuated and repatriated to the nearest hospital or even your country of residence.

Additionally, if you’re accompanied on your nomadic adventures, most health insurance policies cover the return ticket for insured companions to be by your side.

In case of death or serious hospitalization of a close family member in your country of residence, your trip interruption is covered with a round-trip ticket included. Check the conditions carefully. Look for the definition of close relative and mentions of death and hospital stays.

Personal liability

The personal liability limit is undoubtedly the second most important criterion to check. In fact, it protects you if you unintentionally cause material or bodily harm to a third party. For example, if you spill coffee on your coworker’s laptop or burn a housemate during a family dinner, the insurance covers repair costs, your potential medical bills, and possible legal fees. Depending on the severity, this can add up quickly! Prefer the company that offers the highest coverage limit, higher than for medical expenses if possible. A deductible is very often applied per claim, between €0 and €150.

In our selection, ACS, Chapka, and World Nomads stand out for their bodily injury limits.

Warning: Personal liability doesn’t cover you for damage caused while driving a motorized vehicle (except scooters under 125cc). If you rent a car or motorcycle, additional insurance is necessary to cover you in case of an accident. The material costs of your vehicle and the one you hit, as well as the medical expenses of anyone you may have injured, will then be covered.

If you move abroad or rent a place for several months, rental liability is very useful. In case of fire, explosion, or water damage, it covers material damage caused to the accommodation (premises and owner’s furniture), the building, and neighbors.

Fabienne and Ben as digital nomads

Be careful not to confuse this with home insurance! When you move in, you’ll need to take out home insurance to cover your belongings and gear damage in case of an incident or theft. In some countries, taking out one is optional (notably Canada and Australia). In this case, insurance covering your rental liability can be interesting, but your landlord may also ask you for an insurance certificate. Often, the limits of this type of insurance are very high for peace of mind.

Among our selection, the only insurance contracts that include rental liability is Chapka’s CAP Tempo expat.

Legal assistance and criminal bail advance

We hope this doesn’t happen to you, but you could very well face the justice system during your digital nomad adventures. In case of involuntary infraction and criminal proceedings against you (a trial following an accident or altercation, for example), travel insurance covers legal fees. And if you’re in jail or about to be and bail is necessary, the companies will advance the necessary money, but you’ll have to repay this amount later.

Death

It’s hard to consider the worst that could happen when you’re about to experience nomadism or expatriation… Generally, in case of death, the insurance company:

  • Covers repatriation of the body;
  • Pays death benefits (accidental or otherwise) to your loved ones (spouse, children…);
  • Covers coffin costs or funeral expenses up to a certain limit

Electronic equipment protection

Being a digital nomad means you need to stay connected! You probably work on a computer, own a smartphone, and maybe a tablet, a camera… In short, these are your work tools. Some coverage includes electronic equipment protection and others offer this as an option. Again, check the general conditions carefully (and keep your receipts/invoices!).

Baggage insurance (theft, loss, or destruction)

When you’re nomadic, your luggage contains a good portion of your life and work tools. Contracts compensate you mainly in case of theft, delay, loss, or destruction of luggage during your outbound journey to your destination country. Check the amount for personal belongings and valuables carefully.

Cash advance in case of theft or loss of administrative documents

In case of theft or loss of identity documents or payment methods, insurance companies advance you a sum of money (which you’ll have to repay later) to help you sort things out.

Credit card abroad

No doubt you’ll use your credit card abroad, whether you’re going to a single country or touring colivings around the world! For its practicality, we strongly recommend getting a credit card from a mobile bank. To help you choose the bank suited to your nomadic lifestyle, we recommend our article on N26, a solid bank for digital nomads!

The most common exclusions

Inclusions are important, but exclusions are even more so! We agree, reading the fine print is a pain. But it helps you leave with peace of mind knowing what to expect :).

Note: This list isn’t exhaustive and there are differences depending on the companies, but we’ve tried to highlight the most important exclusions.

Pre-existing conditions

With rare exceptions, insurance doesn’t cover any illness or accident prior to your departure. When subscribing, you’ll need to fill out a medical questionnaire to attest to your health status. True Traveller is one of the few insurers that covers a range of pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll be able to view this list when you sign up, after filling out the medical declaration. If your condition isn’t on the list, you’ll need to declare it, and True Traveller will contact you with further details to add it to your coverage.

Pregnancy

You’re going to leave for 6 months, a year, or more in new countries and might have to manage a pregnancy. About half of the policies presented in the comparison cover part of the health costs related to pregnancy (care, delivery). Check the limit amount and conditions carefully.

Bodily and material damage caused while driving a vehicle

Don’t forget that damage caused while driving a motorized vehicle isn’t covered. So, in case of an accident while driving a motorized vehicle, your insurance covers your medical expenses. But the company won’t pay the costs related to damage to the vehicle itself, another vehicle involved, or medical costs of another person involved in the accident.

Your Visa or Mastercard credit card often offers this coverage. Otherwise, take out car insurance.

Incidents caused while driving a motorized vehicle over 125cc

This point is especially important if you’re going to Southeast Asia or South America. Keep in mind that you’re not covered in case of an accident if the vehicle’s engine capacity exceeds 125cc, whether bodily or material damage. Taking out separate car insurance will be very useful!

High-risk sports

For some, nomadism is an opportunity to try new sports: surfing in Bali, skiing in Switzerland, rock climbing in western Canada, etc. However, high-risk sports are often excluded from coverage. To be covered while practicing extreme sports, you can add this option when subscribing to certain policies.

Other exclusions

The previous exclusions are the most common and most important to check, in our opinion. But you’ll see there are many in the general conditions! To complete this list, here are other scenarios where you won’t be covered:

  • Non-emergency dental care and vision expenses
  • Vaccination costs
  • Gear purchased during the trip
  • Thefts without break-in (or items not placed in a secure location)
  • Accidents caused under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Damage caused intentionally
  • Incidents following a natural disaster, civil war, terrorist attack, nuclear disaster…

Are you covered by your primary health insurance?

Maybe you’re thinking you’ll be covered by your home health insurance. We’d like to tell you that’s the case, but unfortunately the coverage isn’t sufficient for working travelers.

That said, depending on your home country and your health coverage, you might not need to buy a third party travel insurance. It could be more interesting to simply buy a travel extension package to your home health insurance (for example in Switzerland that’s the solution that works the best, in France not at all).

So, check first what covers your home health insurance when you travel abroad (usually it’s not much and not long enough for a remote worker). Then, check if you could buy a travel insurance plan that covers the important criteria for a good digital nomad’s coverage.

Is your credit card coverage enough?

Do you have a standard Visa or Mastercard? Good news: you’re covered! Bad news: not enough… To have decent coverage, you need a Visa Premier or Mastercard Gold. This way, you’ll benefit from coverage for medical expenses, liability, cancellation, baggage, but with some drawbacks:

  • Insurance is only valid during the first 90 days of travel, so forget it for digital nomads
  • You must have paid for your trip with this credit card
  • Pay close attention to exclusions that depend on cards and banks! Again, read the general conditions carefully 😉
  • You’ll be reimbursed in addition to primary health insurance, which implies advance payment and extra paperwork

Insurance for Swiss, Belgian, and Quebecer digital nomads

This article is aimed at English-speakers living in Europe, but what about specific cases for Belgians, Swiss, and Quebecers?

For the Swiss, it’s a bit special. For our part, we had supplementary insurance to Lamal. To go further, we invite you to read our complete article on travel insurance for Swiss residents.

For Belgians, it’s a bit like France. Your health insurance fund covers you for any stay in Europe. So request the European Health Insurance Card from your health insurance fund. If you leave Europe, you must subscribe to travel insurance to be covered. Among the selection, you can subscribe to Chapka, ACS, True Traveller, and SafetyWing.

Finally, for Quebecers, you can subscribe to insurance through the comparison that covers citizens worldwide. However, know that you’ll be partially covered by RAMQ. We detail all this in the section dedicated to travel insurance for Quebecers.

That’s everything for this guide on travel insurance for working remotely! And you, which digital nomad insurance contract did you choose? For other resources, we invite you to check out our various articles on life as a digital nomad. You’ll find our reviews of different colivings (Anceu, Cloudcitadel…), how we created our own, our reflections on nomadism…
